군대에서 밤을 지새며 행군을 하다가 잠시 짬을 내어 1시간 정도 잠을 청한 후 다시 행군하는 매우 피곤했던 훈련을 경험했습니다. 그 잠을 청하는 시간은 잠이 아니라 군화를 벗고 잠시라도 발을 쉬게 한 후 행군을 이어갈 힘을 보충하는 시간 정도였습니다. 더욱이 소대를 이끄는 입장에서 오는 책임감은 몸을 더욱 더 고단하게 했습니다. 삶을 살아가면서 “그 고단함이 곧, 인생이다”라고 느낍니다. 이민자의 삶은 더 고단하다고 여겨집니다. “잘 쉬어야 오래 건강하게 일할 수 있다”는 표현은 매우 상식적이지만, 안타깝게도, 쉬기 어려운 이민자의 현실에서는 비상식적이 되고 맙니다. 기회가 되어, 잠시 쉰다고 해도, “더 긴 쉼”을 원하는 것이 인지상정이지요. 그 “더 긴 쉼”을 갈구하는 우리 그리스도인들을 위해, 성삼위 하나님께서, 예수님의 십자가와 부활을 통해 완성하신 영원한 쉼(구원)을 허락해 주셨습니다(히 4:9-10, “그런즉 안식할 때가 하나님의 백성에게 남아 있도다 이미 그의 안식에 들어간 자는 하나님이 자기의 일을 쉬심과 같이 그도 자기의 일을 쉬느니라”). 그 영원한 쉼을 향해 가면서, 우리는, 예수님 안에서의 쉼(위로, 격려, 소망)을 징검다리로 삼습니다(마 11:28, “수고하고 짐 진 자들아 다 내게로 오라 내가 너희를 쉬게 하리라”).
I once experienced an extremely exhausting operation in the military where we marched through the night. During a brief break, about an hour of sleep was given before setting off on the march once again. That moment of sleep wasn’t even real rest—it was merely a brief respite to take off my boots, let my feet rest for a moment, and gather enough strength to press on. Moreover, the heavy burden of responsibility as a platoon leader made my body feel all the more exhausted. Living through life, I often feel that “this very weariness is, in fact, life itself.” The life of an immigrant feels even more wearying. While the saying, “You must rest well to work healthily for a long time,” sounds like common sense, it pitifully becomes impractical in the reality of an immigrant’s life, where rest is hard to come by. Even when an opportunity allows for a brief pause, it is only human nature to long for a “longer rest.” For us Christians who yearn for that “longer rest,” the Triune God has granted us eternal rest—our salvation—fulfilled through the cross and resurrection of Jesus (“So then, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God, for whoever has entered God’s rest has also rested from his works as God did from his”(Heb. 4:9-10 ESV)). As we journey toward that eternal rest, we use the rest found in Jesus—His comfort, encouragement, and hope—as stepping stones along the way(“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest”(Matt. 11:28 ESV)).
