프레드릭 밀러라고 하는 선교사는, 자신의 이름을 한국식 이름인 “민로아”로 개명하고, 일본제국주의 아래에서 신음하던 한국인의 편에 서서, 45년간 (1892년~1937년), 예수 그리스도 만이 그들에게 유일한 소망과 생명임을 선포하였고, 예수님을 20개의 성품으로 정리한 찬송가(96장)를 남겨주었지요. 올해 여름학교에서 그 찬송가를 함께 부르고 그 20개의 예수님의 성품을 함께 배웠습니다. 7주차에는, 이 20개의 성품 중에 자기 자신에게 가장 마음에 남는 것 한 개씩 정했고, 그들이 이 삶에서 그 성품을 풍성하게 경험하게 해 주시도록 성삼위 하나님께 간절히 기도드렸습니다. 이윽고, 쉽지 않았던 여름학교 준비의 시간과 성삼위 하나님만을 간절히 붙잡았던 시간이 떠올랐습니다. 힘든 시간이 올 수 있음을 알아, 기도로 준비하고 왔는데, 놀라우신 성삼위 하나님께서 영적인 은혜와 육적인 은혜를 풍성하게 주셔서 넉넉히 마무리하게 되었습니다. 기도와 재정과 몸으로 여름학교를 섬겨주신 모든 분들께 감사드리고, 성삼위 하나님께 모든 영광을 올려드립니다! 문득, “나는 그 20개 중에 어떤 것이 마음에 많이 남는가?” 물음이 물어지고, “없는 자의 풍성”을 고백하게 됩니다. (“…내가 온 것은 양으로 생명을 얻게 하고 더 풍성히 얻게 하려는 것이라”(요 10:10b))
A missionary named Frederick S. Miller adopted the Korean name “Min Ro-a” (민로아) and stood alongside the Korean people suffering under Japanese imperialism. For 45 years (1892–1937), he proclaimed that Jesus Christ is their only hope and life, and he left us a hymn (Hymnal 96) that reflects 20 attributes of Jesus. During this year’s summer school, we sang this hymn together and learned about these 20 attributes of Jesus. In the 7th week, each student selected one attribute among the 20 that resonated most with their heart, and we prayed earnestly to the Triune God that they would abundantly experience that attribute in their lives. Soon, memories flooded back of the challenging preparation for the summer school and the moments when we clung solely to the Triune God. Knowing that difficult times could come, we came prepared through prayer, and our wonderful Triune God poured out spiritual and physical grace so abundantly that we were able to finish everything well. I would like to express my deepest gratitude to everyone who served the summer school through prayer, financial support, and physical labor, and I attribute all the glory to the Triune God! Suddenly, the question comes to mind: “Which of those 20 attributes resonated most with my own heart?” And I find myself confessing, “Abundance for those who have nothing.” (“… I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.” (Jn. 10:10b ESV))
