지난 화요일(7월 28일)에 양로원 예배를 인도하였습니다. 그렇게 그곳에 모인 분들의 얼굴에서, 지침, 피곤함, 좌절, 절망, 예수님의 구원이 의미없어졌다는 실망, 예전의 복음의 은혜가 무의미하게 되었다는 패배감을 보았습니다. 각자의 삶이 아픔과 절망과 좌절과 후회 등으로 점철된 상태이기 때문에, 간절한 마음 또는 냉소적인 마음으로 예배에 오셨습니다. 그런데, 성삼위 하나님의 은혜로, “예수복음”을 다시 만나서 눈빛이 바뀌고, 몇 번이고 저를 쳐다보며 그 복음을 곱씹는 분들을 마주하였습니다. 선포된 말씀 안에서, 아무것도 아닌 존재로 살아가는데도, 여전히 존귀하게 그리고 불쌍히 여기시고 품으시고 끝까지 동행하시며 (마 28:20, “내가 세상 끝날까지 너희와 항상 함께 있으리라”) 책임지시는 성삼위 하나님을 만나고 눈물로 반응하는 분들을 만난 것이지요. 아름답고 위로와 격려와 소망이 풍성한 예배였습니다. 우리 시온예배공동체가 함께 꿈꾸고 소망하고 경험하는 예배가 이렇게 되기를 간절히 소망하며 기도합니다. 왜냐하면, 우리도 여전히 그분들과 다름없는 고난의 언덕에서 헐떡거리고 있고 그래서, 말씀으로 받는 은혜 아니면, 살아갈 수가 없기 때문입니다.
Last Tuesday (July 28th), I led a worship service at a nursing home. Looking into the faces of those gathered, I saw weariness, fatigue, frustration, despair, and a sense of disappointment as if Jesus’ salvation no longer held meaning to them, along with a feeling of defeat that the grace of the Gospel had lost its relevance. Because their individual lives had been so deeply scarred by pain, hopelessness, frustration, and regret, they came to the worship either with desperate hearts or with cynicism. Yet, by the grace of the Triune God, as they re-encountered the “Gospel of Jesus,” I witnessed their eyes light up. Some stared back at me time and again, quietly chewing on and digesting that very Gospel. Through the proclaimed Word, they met the Triune God—One who continues to hold us precious, who pities and embraces us, and who faithfully journeys with us to the very end (“I am with you always, to the end of the age.” Mt 28:20), taking full responsibility for us, even as we live as mere nothings in this world. And I saw them respond with tears. It was a beautiful worship service, overflowing with comfort, encouragement, and hope. My earnest prayer is that our Zion Worship Community will dream, hope for, and experience this exact kind of worship together. For we, too, are catching our breath on the same steep hill of suffering, just as they are—and without the grace that comes through His Word, we simply cannot survive.
