계속 2026년 월드컵과 연관된 단상을 적게 됩니다. 지난 두 주간 진행된 두 번의 예선전에서, 이렇다 할 만한 경기력을 보이지 못했다고 평가되던 중, 지난 6월 24일 저녁에 열린 마지막 예선전에서, 가장 저조한 실력으로 경기를 마치게 되어 32강 자력 진출이 좌절되고 말았습니다. 여러 전문가들의 평가를 종합하면, 대한민국의 축구가 약 30년 전으로 후퇴하였다는 결론에 다다릅니다. 시온지체분들과 함께 관람하면서, 사방에서 계속 흘러나오는 원망이 가득 담긴 신음소리는, 대한민국 축구대표팀에 대한 실망과 분노를 담고 있었습니다. 그리고 그러한 졸전을 면치 못한 원인으로 지도력(리더쉽)이 대두가 되었습니다. 선수들은 사상 최고인데, 지도자가 무능하여 졸전을 치렀다는 평가가 아쉬움과 함께 나누어졌습니다. 문득, 우리 시온예배공동체가 떠올랐습니다. 그리고 제 목회적 지도력에 대한 반성의 시간을 가졌습니다. 그 깊은 사색과 기도 속에서 절망하지 않고 감사했던 근거는, 우리의 리더 곧, 시온예배공동체의 머리는, 십자가와 부활로 우리를 구원하시고, 우리를 친히 당신의 몸의 부분으로 삼아주신, 예수 그리스도 한 분 뿐이시라는 진리였습니다(골 1:18, “그는 몸인 교회의 머리시라…”).
I find myself continuing to write reflections connected to the 2026 World Cup. During the past two weeks, through the two qualifying matches, our team was already being critiqued for failing to show any noteworthy performance. Then, in the final qualifying match held on the evening of June 24th, they finished with their poorest display of skill yet, shattering our hopes of advancing to the Round of 32 on our own merits. Synthesizing the evaluations of various experts leads to the sobering conclusion that Korean Soccer has regressed by about thirty years. Watching the match together with the members of Zion, the groans full of resentment flowing from all sides captured the deep disappointment and anger toward the Korean national soccer team. Naturally, leadership emerged as the primary cause behind such a miserably fought game. The sentiment was shared with great regret that while the players themselves are the best in history, the team suffered a dismal defeat due to the incompetence of its leader. Suddenly, our Zion Worship Community came to my mind. It led me into a time of self-reflection regarding my own pastoral leadership. Yet, the reason I did not despair but rather felt grateful amidst that deep contemplation and prayer was a fundamental truth: the only Leader—the true Head of our Zion Worship Community—is Jesus Christ alone, who saved us through His cross and resurrection, and who has personally made us a part of His own body (Colossians 1:18, “And he is the head of the body, the church…”).
