이번에 월드컵 경기를 몇몇 분들과 함께 시청하려고 보니, 티비 화면이 조금 더 컸으면 해서, 온라인 중고시장을 찾던 중 30불짜리 티비를 발견했습니다. 크기는 무려 70인치였구요. 그런데 한 가지 흠이 있었는데 화면의 한 쪽편이 어둡게 되어 있었습니다. 축구경기를 보기에는 큰 문제 없어 보였고, 일단, 크기가 매력적이었습니다. 또한 값이 거저나 다름이 없으니 경기 하나만 보고 버려도 본전이라고 생각이 들어서 구입했습니다. 집에 돌아와 확인해보니 축구경기를 볼 때, 선수 식별이 어렵고, 화면 선명하지 않는 등 생각 보다 훨씬 안 좋았습니다. 결국, 차라리 작은 화면으로 선명하게 보는 것이 좋겠다고 판단하여 결국, 원래 보던 티비로 시청을 하게 되었습니다. 이 하나의 과정을 지나면서, 겉모습이 좋아도, 속모습이 나쁘면 아무 소용이 없다는 사실을 새삼 느꼈습니다. 겉모습이 조금 부족해도 속모습이 좋으면, 그 가치를 발휘한다는 사실 말입니다. 그리스도인으로서 성삼위 하나님 앞에서 진실되고 최선을 다하는 속모습이 우리 안에 더욱 더 강건하게 세워졌으면 하는 간절함과 기도가 있었습니다 (엡 3:16, “그의 영광의 풍성함을 따라 그의 성령으로 말미암아 너희 속사람을 능력으로 강건하게 하시오며”)
When I was preparing to watch the upcoming World Cup matches with a few others, I found myself wishing for a slightly larger TV screen. While browsing an online secondhand market, I came across a TV for just 30 dollars. Its size was a whopping 70 inches. There was, however, one catch: one side of the screen was noticeably dim. Still, it didn’t seem like it would be a major issue for watching football, and above all, the sheer size was incredibly enticing. Moreover, since the price was practically a steal, I figured that even if I threw it away after watching just one match, it would still be well worth the money—so I bought it. Yet, once I brought it home and tested it, it was far worse than I had anticipated. When watching a match, it was difficult to identify the players, and the picture lacked clarity. In the end, I concluded that it would be much better to watch a clear picture on a smaller screen, so we ultimately ended up watching on our original TV. Going through this whole experience reminded me once again of a profound truth: no matter how impressive the outward appearance may be, if the inner quality is lacking, it is utterly useless. On the contrary, even if the outward form is somewhat deficient, if the inside is good, it truly manifests its real value. As Christians, this brought a deep longing and a prayer to my heart—that our inner selves, which stand in truth and do their utmost before the Holy Trinity, may be built up and strengthened evermore. As Ephesians 3:16 reminds us: “I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being.”
