점점 더 이기적으로 변하는 사회를 느낀다는 우버 운전기사의 말이 떠오릅니다. 다른 사람이 어떻게 되든지, 나와 “나와 관계된 사람”만 괜찮으면 된다는 생각이 지배한다는 것입니다. 하나의 실례로, 어떤 사람이 식당에서 음식을 잔뜩 주문해 먹고 돈을 내지 않으려고 머리카락이 나왔다고 거짓말을 했는데, 그 식당의 주방장은 머리카락이 없는 분이었다는 것이지요. 허허허… 그리스도인들이 끊임없이 물어야 하는 질문은, “우리는 구원 받은 사람으로서, 이 세상에서 도대체 무엇이 다르며, 어떻게 다르게 살아가느냐?”는 것이어야 합니다. 이 질문이 상실된 교회는 그리스도인들에게 엉뚱한 것만 요구합니다. 복을 받기 위해서 교회에서 열심히 섬기라든지 사업이나 자녀가 잘 되기 위해서 예배를 열심히 드리라는 것들입니다. 우리가 예배를 드리고 교회를 섬기는 것은, 믿음으로 예수님과 연합되어 이미 받은 구원의 은혜 때문에, 성삼위 하나님께 조건 없이 올려 드리는 것입니다. 그리고, 우리가 살아가는 “이기적인 사회”에서 예수님을 따르는 사람 답게 이타적으로 살아가는 것이지요. 또 하나의 은혜인, 천국 상급(“하늘에서 너희 상이 큼이라”/ 마 5:12)을 바라보면서 말이지요.
I am reminded of what an Uber driver once said about feeling that society is becoming increasingly selfish. It is the idea that as long as ‘I and my people’ are okay, it doesn’t matter what happens to others. As an example, someone once ordered a feast at a restaurant and lied about finding a hair in the food just to avoid paying—only to find out that the chef was actually bald! (Haha…) The question Christians must constantly ask themselves is: ‘As those who are saved, what makes us different in this world, and how are we living differently?’ A church that has lost sight of this question demands the wrong things from its believers—urging them to serve the church fervently just to receive blessings, or to attend worship strictly so their businesses or children will prosper. However, we worship and serve the church unconditionally to the Triune God, simply because of the grace of salvation we have already received through our union with Jesus in faith. Furthermore, it is about living altruistically, as true followers of Jesus, in this ‘selfish society’ we inhabit—all while looking forward to the additional grace: our heavenly reward (‘Great is your reward in heaven’ / Matthew 5:12).
