최근에 시온장로교회 지체들이 함께 드린 두 번의 천국환송예배를 바탕으로 이 땅위에서 교회의 역할에 대해 세 가지로 생각해 봅니다. 첫째, 적극적이고 능동적으로 생각할 때, 교회는 복음을 세상에 전하기 위해 존재합니다(마 28:18~20, 행 1:8). 둘째, 그러나, 이보다 더 앞서서, 예배를 위해 존재합니다. 우리가 성삼위하나님을 예배하기 위해 창조되었고 구원받았기 때문에(사 43:21, 엡 1:6), 그 구원의 목적이 이루어지는 자리에 서는 것보다 중요한 것은 없기 때문입니다. 진정한 예배자가 진정한 복음을 나누는 자 정확하게는, 복음을 가진 자 답게 살아갈 수 있는 것이지요. 셋째, 하나님의 백성이 천국으로 가는 걸음을 돕고, 위로하고, 격려하고, 마무리하는 것을 돕기 위해 존재합니다. 하루하루 지치고 피곤한 삶과 그리스도인 답게 세상의 가치관과 맞서는 여정을 마치고 주일에 예배를 드리기 위해 모일 때마다, 하나님의 말씀(예수 복음)을 올바르게 선포하여, 그 말씀 위에서, 성도가 자신의 삶을 돌아보고, 감사하고, 회개하고, 회복되도록 돕는 것입니다. 이 세 가지 역할은 그 성도 한 명 한 명이 하나님 아버지의 부르심을 따라 천국에 들어갈 때까지, 그리고, 예수님께서 재림하실 때까지 계속됩니다. 시온도이 세 가지 역할을 위해 존재합니다.

Recently, the members of Zion Presbyterian Church have held two funeral worship services, and as a result, I would like to reflect on the threefold role of the church on this earth. First, from a proactive and active perspective, the church exists to proclaim the Gospel to the world (Matthew 28:18–20, Acts 1:8). Second, even prior to that, the church exists for worship. Since we were created and redeemed to worship the Triune God (Isaiah 43:21, Ephesians 1:6), nothing is more important than standing in the place where the purpose of that salvation is fulfilled. Only a true worshiper can truly share the Gospel—or more accurately, live a life worthy of those who possess the Gospel. Third, the church exists to help, comfort, encourage, and support God’s people until they conclude their physical and spiritual journey toward heaven. Every time we gather for Lord’s Day worship after a week of facing the world’s values and navigating an exhausting life, the church must rightly proclaim the Word of God (the Gospel of Jesus). Based on that Word, we help Christians reflect on their lives, offer thanks, repent, and find restoration. These three roles continue until each believer enters heaven at the call of God the Father, and until the Second Coming of Jesus. Zion, too, exists for these three purposes.
