At Starbucks, I saw a person order a cup of coffee, receive it, then walk over to the display area where cups bearing the Starbucks logo were placed. She picked one up and simply walked out. A staff person noticing this followed her out, calling out “Excuse me” several times, but she never turned around and quickly hurried away as if fleeing. Among the employees gathered, there was a large-framed male worker, yet no one went after her to catch her. It seemed there was a fear that if they restrained her, they might face even greater harm if she were to sue them over human rights issues. It was shocking that such a thing occurred in broad daylight in a place filled with so many employees. Yet, as I watched this happen, the sight of that thief (?) hurriedly leaving the scene felt strangely like our own pitiful backs—weak human beings who commit sin before God the Father and quickly try to hide away. And it broke my heart. What pained my heart even more, however, was being deeply consumed by the thought of the Triune God: the protagonist of an incomprehensible, unthinkable love who still embraces us, pities us, and whose heart yearns for us despite who we are (As God says of a sinful Israel– “…For as often as I speak against him, I do remember him still. Therefore my heart yearns for him; I will surely have mercy on him…” [Jer 31:20]). Standing upon this Word, I ask this again: “Why do You continue to love me, who flees like a fugitive after sinning against You?”
