몇 주 전 강대상에 올라왔던 한 쌍의 화분이 떠오릅니다. 한 쪽 꽃은 계속 싱싱했는데 다른 한 쪽 꽃은 쉽게 시들었습니다. 잘은 몰라도 꽃의 상태가 서로 아주 많이 달랐던 것 같습니다. 꽃을 사는 사람은 겉모습에서 그 다름을 눈치채지 못했지만, 한 쪽은 속이 건강하고 다른 한 쪽은 속이 병들었을 가능성이 농후한 것이지요. 그런데 그 결과는 너무 달랐습니다. 그래서, 보이는 부분도 중요하지만, 사실은 보이지 않는 속이 더 중요하다는 생각을 해보게 됩니다. 우리 그리스도인의 삶도 그러하지요. 우리는 종종 보이는 부분(겉사람, 상황, 환경)에 집중하고 반응하고 평가하며 소망과 절망을 경험하곤 합니다. 그런데, 겉이 어떠하건, 보이지 않는 부분(속사람, 영혼)이 건강한 삶 곧, 성삼위 하나님의 은혜 가운데 매순간을 성삼위 하나님을 기도로 의지하며 묵묵히 걸어가는 건강하고 건전한 자리에 있다면, 정작 중요한 때 또는 어려운 시간이 다가왔을 때, 의연하게 성도의 걸음을 걸어가는 경우를 많이 보게 됩니다. 엡 3:14~19에 담긴, 사도바울의 에베소교회 성도를 위한 기도 속에서, 핵심이 되는 16절(그의 영광의 풍성함을 따라 그의 성령으로 말미암아 너희 속사람을 능력으로 강건하게 하시오며)이 떠올라, 같은 믿음으로 시온을 위한 기도를 올려드립니다!
I am reminded of a pair of potted flowers that graced our pulpit a few weeks ago. While one side remained fresh and vibrant, the other withered all too quickly. Though outwardly they appeared much the same, their inner condition could not have been more different. The buyer likely caught no hint of this difference at a glance, yet one was healthy to its core while the other was already failing within. How vastly different were their ends! It serves as a quiet reminder that while what is seen matters, what remains unseen on the inside matters far more. So it is with the Christian life. We often focus on, react to, and evaluate visible things—our outer self, our circumstances, and our environment—experiencing hope and despair based on them. Yet, regardless of external conditions, if our unseen soul—our inner person—remains healthy, grounded in the grace of the Triune God and walking faithfully in quiet prayer, a remarkable strength emerges. When critical moments or trial-filled seasons arrive, it is precisely those whose inner self is whole who walk forward with steadfast grace and unwavering faith. Thinking of verse 16, the heart of Apostle Paul’s prayer for the Ephesians in Ephesians 3:14–19 (“that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being.”), I offer up this same prayer of faith for Zion!
