약 2주 전인 지난 화요일(8월 25일)에 네팔에서 발생한 천재지변인 빙하붕괴 홍수사건으로 대략 10,000여명의 인명피해가 발생했습니다. 그 비참하고 아픈 사건 속에서 생각할 일들이 많은 중, 한 집이 관심을 받고 있습니다. 그 홍수에 주변의 모든 건물들이 붕괴되고 휩쓸려 가던 중에도 흔들리지 않고 견딘 집입니다. 그래서 그 안에 있던 사람들이 생명을 건지게 되었습니다. 그것은 우연의 결과가 아니라, 건축과학적으로 그 집이 다른 집들과 완전히 다른, 깊고 강한 구조로 지어졌기 때문이었습니다. 그 집에 있으면, 또 다른 홍수가 몰려와도 안전할 것입니다. 예수님과 믿음으로 연합한 우리에게는 이와 비견되는 그러나, 완전히 안전한 망대가 있습니다(“여호와의 이름은 견고한 망대라 의인은 그리로 달려가서 안전함을 얻느니라(잠 18:10)”). 그 안전함은 환난날에 우리를 도우시고 구원하시는 것이고, 우리가 하나님의 부르심을 받을 때, 조금의 망설임이나 지체함없이 천국에 들어가는 것입니다. 죽음 앞에서 생명을 부지하는 것이 아니라 적극적으로 당당하게 천국에 입성하는 것이지요. 진실로 감사하고 감격됩니다. 어찌하여, 이렇게 고귀하고 견고한 구원의 은혜가 우리에게 주어졌는가요? “신묘막측”하시다고 입을 벌려 고백하는 수 밖에요(시 139:14).
On Tuesday, August 25—about two weeks ago—a catastrophic Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) struck Nepal, leaving approximately 10,000 casualties in its wake. Amidst the heartbreak and the weight of that tragic disaster, one particular house has drawn widespread attention. As the floodwaters raged, destroying and sweeping away every surrounding building, this single house stood unshaken and endured. Because of it, the people inside survived. It was no stroke of luck; architectural engineering revealed that the home had been built on a deep, robust foundation entirely different from the rest. Standing inside that house, one would remain safe even if another flood were to sweep through. For us who have been united with Jesus by faith, we possess a tower far beyond compare—one of absolute safety: “The name of the LORD is a strong tower; the righteous man runs into it and is safe” (Proverbs 18:10 ESV). That safety means He helps and saves us in times of trouble, and when God calls us home, we enter heaven without a moment’s hesitation or delay. It is not merely clinging to life in the face of death, but entering heaven boldly and triumphantly. How truly grateful and deeply moved we are! How is it that such a noble, steadfast grace of salvation has been given to us? We can only open our mouths and marvel, confessing that He “fearfully and wonderfully made (us)” (Psalm 139:14).
