2026년 북중미 월드컵이 시작되었습니다. 대한민국은 체코와의 경기를 미국 동부시간으로 저녁 10시에 치렀습니다. 시간의 부담 속에서도 몇몇 분들이 함께 모여서, 생중계로 관전하였습니다. 처음부터 한국이 경기를 잘 이끌고 갔지만, 골을 넣지 못해 안타까웠던 중, 후반 14분경에 체코에게 첫 골을 내어주어서 마음이 아팠지만 서로 격려하면서 끝까지 응원했습니다. 약 8분 후에 그림 같은 슛이 체코 골대의 그물을 가르면서, 경기는 원점이 되었고, 후반 35분경에, 역전골이 터지면서, 첫 경기를 역전승으로 장식하게 되었지요. 두 번의 골을 넣었을 때, 우리는 너나 할 것 없이 모두 일어나, 손바닥을 맞대며 환호했습니다. 그러한 시간을 보내면서 두 가지 생각을 했습니다. 먼저는 예수님 안에서 하나 된 식구들이 함께 즐거운 시간을 보낼 수 있음이 감사하다는 생각이었습니다(시 133:1, “형제가 연합하여 동거함이 어찌 그리 선하고 아름다운고”). 둘째는, 우리가 선수들의 경기를 지켜 보았듯이, 천국에서 우리를 지켜보는 믿음의 선배들 앞에, 현역으로서, 믿음의 경주를 위해 좀 더 분발해야겠다는 생각이었습니다(히 12:1, “… 우리에게 구름같이 둘러싼 허다한 증인들이 있으니… 인내로써 우리 앞에 당한 경주를 하며”).
The 2026 FIFA World Cup has begun. South Korea played its match against the Czech Republic at 10:00 PM Eastern Standard Time. Despite the late hour, several of us gathered together to watch the live broadcast. From the very beginning, Korea controlled the game well, so it was frustrating when we couldn’t manage to score. To our heartbreak, we conceded the first goal to the Czech Republic around the 14th minute of the second half, but we kept encouraging one another and cheered them on until the very end. About 8 minutes later, a picture-perfect shot ripped through the Czech net, bringing the game back to a tie. Then, around the 35th minute of the second half, a spectacular comeback goal was scored, allowing us to crown our very first match with a thrilling come-from-behind victory. When those two goals went in, every single one of us, without exception, jumped to our feet, high-fived, and cheered. Spending that time together brought two thoughts to my mind. First, I felt deeply grateful that we, as family members united in Jesus, could share such a joyful time together (Psalm 133:1, “Behold, how good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell in unity!”). Second, just as we watched the players compete on the field, it made me think that we, as active players currently on the “field” of living as Christians in this world, need to spur ourselves on in our own race of faith in light of our predecessors of faith who are watching us from heaven (Hebrews 12:1, “…since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses… let us run with endurance the race that is set before us”).
