대학 첫 해를 마친 딸이 기숙사를 나오는 과정을 함께 하면서 이 땅의 삶에 대해 다시 한 번 생각하는 시간을 가졌습니다. 1년 동안 살았는데, 싣고 와야 하는 짐이 생각보다 많았습니다. 기숙사의 생활은 기간이 정해져 있어서 그 기간에 맞춰서 적응하며 살아가지만, 언젠가는 떠날 준비를 하고 살지요. 물건을 사서 쌓아 놓는 것도 지혜롭게 해야 합니다. 그렇게 해도, 정작 그 곳을 떠날 때면, 조금 더 무거워지고 다양해진 짐을 가지고 나오는 것이지요. 떠날 준비를 한다는 것이 그렇게 쉽지 않은 것처럼, 이 땅에서 “기숙사”의 삶(나그네의 삶)을 살아가는 천국시민권자인 우리도 떠날 준비에 대해 생각하지 않고 살곤 합니다. 떠날 시간이 미리 정해져 있지 않기 때문에, 인생의 여정 동안, 많은 것을 사서 쌓아 놓는 것이 당연하게 여겨지지요. 심지어, 이 땅에 “소망”까지 두고, 땅에서 잘됨(성공, 부, 건강)이 참된 복이라고 생각하기도 합니다. 허나, 예수님과 연합한 우리 그리스도인들은 천국에 소망을 두고 항상 떠날 준비(부르심을 받을 준비)를 하며 살아가야 하는 복된 존재들입니다(“… 너희가 그리스도와 함께 다시 살리심을 받았으면 위의 것을 찾으라…” 골 3:1).
As I helped my daughter move out of her dormitory after finishing her freshman year of college, I had a moment to reflect once again on our life on this earth. Although she had lived there for only a year, the amount of belongings we had to bring back was far more than I had expected. Life in a dormitory is for a fixed term; thus, we adapt to that environment for a set season, yet we always live with the intent to eventually depart. So we should be wise about purchasing and accumulating possessions. Even so, when the time finally comes to leave, we inevitably walk out with baggage that has become heavier and more varied than when we first arrived. Just as preparing to leave a dorm is not easy, we—as citizens of Heaven living a “dormitory-like” life (the life of a sojourner) on this earth—often live without much thought about our own departure. Since the time of our departure is not pre-scheduled, it seems only natural to buy and pile up many things throughout our life’s journey. Sometimes, we even place our “hope” in this world, mistakenly believing that earthly prosperity—such as success, wealth, and health—is the only true blessing. However, as Christians united with Jesus, we are blessed beings who must live with our hope fixed on Heaven, always remaining prepared for our departure (prepared for His calling). As Colossians 3:1 reminds us: “If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above…”
