2026년도 어린이주일을 맞이하였습니다. 고국 대한민국에 어린이날이 제정되고 지켜진 것은 1923년 5월 1일이었습니다. 아동문학가, 소파 방정환이 1921년부터 “어른”에 대한 대칭어로 “어린 사람”이라는 뜻의 “어린이”를 사용하면서, 어린이를 독립적인 인격체로 대우해야 함을 주장하여 시작되었지요. 터키, 중국, 미국, 멕시코, 인도 등에도 어린이날이 있고, 11월 20일은 1954년 유엔에서 제정한 “세계 어린이날”입니다. 어린이날의 핵심은 어린이를 인격체로 인정(대우)하는 것입니다. 하나님의 말씀인 성경은 약 4,000년 전 사건인, 하나님께서 아브라함의 아들인 이스마엘의 소리를 들으시고 불쌍히 여기시는 과정(창 21:17)과 예수님께서 어린이의 의미와 가치를 말씀하신 것(마 18:1-5 등), 그리고 자녀(어린이)를 인격과 성경으로 가르쳐야 함 등을 통해 계속 말씀하고 계십니다(엡 6:4, 골 3:21). 즉, 성삼위 하나님께서는, (가정과 교회 안의) 어린이를 인격체와 성도로 인정(대우)하고, 어른이 그 어린이에게 믿음의 본을 보이도록 명령하시는 것이지요. 하여, 오늘 이 날, 어른 성도로서 우리의 삶의 자리를 하나님과 어린이 앞에서 살피는, 복된 시간을 가지시기 기도합니다.
We have now reached the Lord’s Day focused on Children 2026. Children’s Day in South Korea began on May 1, 1923. It was sparked by the children’s literature activist Bang Jeong-hwan, who coined the term “Eorini” in 1921 to advocate for treating children as independent individuals with their own dignity. While many nations–such as Türkiye, China, the US, Mexico, and India–celebrate Children’s Day and the UN-established “Universal Children’s Day” on November 20, the core essence remains the same: recognizing the core essence of Children’s Day lies in acknowledging and treating children as persons of worth. The Bible, which is the Word of God, has consistently emphasized this truth for millennia. We see it 4,000 years ago when God heard the voice of Ishmael, Abraham’s son, and looked upon him with compassion (Gen 21:17), in Jesus’ teachings on the meaning and the value of children (Mat 18:1-5), and in the mandates to raise them with respect for their personhood and through the lens of Scripture (Eph 6:4, Col 3:21). In essence, the Triune God commands us to treat children in our homes and churches as distinct individuals and fellow believers, while calling adults to be models of faith for them. Therefore, on this day, I hope and pray that we may all take a blessed moment to examine our lives as adult believers before both God and our children.
