50센트가 주는 만족을 아십니까? 교회의 밀린 행정업무를 위해 새벽부터 근처 스타벅스(커피전문점)에서 12온즈에 2불 81전짜리 커피를 시켜놓고 일하곤 합니다. 한 3시간 정도 일하면, 커피를 다 마시거나, 커피가 식어 있곤 합니다. 그러면, 50센트를 내고 다시 따끈하고 막 내린 아주 신선한 커피를 마실 수 있습니다. 우리는 그것을 리필(Refill)이라고 부르지요? 그러면, 그 커피를 다시 음미하면서, 또 한 3시간 정도 집중해서 일을 할 수 있습니다. 그런데, 그렇게 커피를 리필하려고 카운터에 가서, 50센트를 만지작거리면서 리필을 신청하면, 50센트를 받지 않고, 무료로 리필을 해주곤 합니다. 그러면, 입에서 “땡큐”가 절로 나오고, 마음에 만족이 있습니다. 작은 호의이고 배려인데, 그것을 받는 사람은, 예상하지 않았던 호의에 만족하고 감사하게 되는 것이지요. 거저 받는 기쁨이 아닐까요? 우리가 받은 구원은 “무료”입니다(롬 3:24). 예수님께서 십자가와 부활로 그 값을 다 치르셨기 때문이지요(고전 6:20). 그런데, 때로는, 그 놀라운 구원이 이 50센트를 받지 않은 무료 리필보다도 못하다는 생각을 합니다. 그 구원이 그만큼 가치가 없기 때문이 아니라, 우리가 그것을 지극히 당연하다고 여기거나, 지나칠만큼 그 무료 구원에 익숙해져 버렸기 때문일 것입니다.

Do you know the satisfaction that 50 cents can bring? To catch up on overdue administrative work for the church, I often head to a nearby Starbucks at dawn, order a 12-ounce coffee for $2.81, and get to work. After about three hours, the cup is usually empty or the coffee has gone cold. That is when I can pay just 50 cents to get a fresh, hot, newly brewed cup. We call that a “refill,” right? With that second cup to savor, I can focus and work for another three hours. However, sometimes when I go to the counter to ask for that refill, fidgeting with the 50-cent coin in my hand, the barista waves it away and gives it to me for free. In that moment, a “thank you” flows naturally from my lips, and my heart is filled with satisfaction. It is a small gesture of kindness and consideration, but as the recipient, I find myself deeply satisfied and grateful for that unexpected favor. Is this not the joy of receiving something for free? Our salvation is “free” (Romans 3:24). It is free because Jesus paid the full price through His cross and resurrection (1 Corinthians 6:20). Yet, sometimes I catch myself thinking that this miraculous salvation feels like it’s worth less than a free 50-cent coffee refill. It is not because our salvation lacks value, but because we have either begun to take it for granted or have grown far too accustomed to receiving it for free.
