이미 많은 분들이 알고 계시듯, 우리가 살아가는 삶은 “선택의 연속”입니다. 매 순간, 우리는 선택하며 살아왔고, 지금도 선택하며 살고, 앞으로도 그렇게 할 것입니다. 때로는 선택이 확연히 다른 결과로 이끌기도 하지만, 많은 경우에, 그 선택이 그리 큰 차이를 만들지 못합니다. 그래도, 우리는 지속적으로 선택하며 살아갑니다. 선택의 내용이 가벼운 것일 때도 많지만, 삶의 무게를 걸만큼 아주 무거운 것일 때도 있습니다. 우리 성도 중 한 분의 무거운 선택의 과정을 보면서, 그 선택의 결과를 아름답게 인도하여 주시길 하나님 아버지께 기도드렸습니다. 그렇게 무거운 시간 중에도, 제게는 깊은 감사함이 있었습니다. 첫째, 이러한 우리의 선택의 과정과 결과가 어떠하건, 우리그리스도인은, 차원이 다르고 완전한 결과를 이미 가지고 있다는 사실 때문이었습니다. 그 결과는 바로, 예수님의 십자가와 부활로 이루어진 “구원”이고 “회복”이며, “천국에서의 영원한 생명”입니다. 둘째, 자격과 소망이 없는 우리가, 성삼위 하나님의 형언할 수 없는 은혜로, 그 자리에 영원히 서있다는 사실 때문이었습니다. 셋째, 그 자리에 우리가 서있는 것은 우리가 예수님을 선택했기 때문이 아니라, 예수님께서 우리를 선택하셨다는 사실 때문이었습니다. (요한복음 15:16, “너희가 나를 택한 것이 아니요 내가 너희를 택하여 세웠나니…”)

As many of you already know, life is a “succession of choices.” At every moment, we have lived making choices; we do so now, and we will continue to do so in the future. Sometimes these choices lead to markedly different outcomes, but in many cases, they do not seem to make a big difference. Nevertheless, we persevere in making choices. While the nature of these choices is often light, there are times when they are so heavy that they carry the full weight of our lives. As I witnessed the process of a heavy choice being made by one of our members, I prayed to Father God that He would beautifully guide the outcome of that choice. Even during such a heavy time, I found myself filled with deep gratitude. First, I am grateful because, regardless of the process or outcome of our choices, we as Christians already possess a complete and transcendent result. That result is the “Salvation,” “Restoration,” amd “Eternal Life in Heaven” accomplished through the Cross and Resurrection of Jesus. Second, I am grateful for the fact that we, who are unworthy and without hope, stand eternally in that place by the indescribable grace of the Triune God. Third, I am grateful because we stand in that place not because we chose Jesus, but because Jesus chose us. (John 15:16 ESV, “You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you…”)
