최근, 스타벅스에서 교회의 행정업무 및 설교준비를 하는 중에, 한 시각장애인을 보았습니다. 그 분은 몸집이 제법 큰 도우미 한 분을 의지하고 들어왔습니다. 한 30여분동안 제가 앉은 테이블 끝에 앉아서, 이런 저런 대화를 그 도우미와 나누더니, 갑자기, 도우미를 의지하여, 커피를 만드는 바리스타에게 다가가서, 궁금한 점을 문의하고 다시 자리로 돌아왔습니다. 그리고 도우미에게 도움을 주어서 정말 “감사”했다고 말했습니다. 10여분 후에 자리를 떠날 때, 그 도우미를 “엄마”라고 부르면서, 떠날 것을 요청하였습니다. 저는 무심결에, 그 시각장애인의 얼굴을 보았는데, 도우미보다 나이가 더 많아 보였습니다. 순간 생각한 것은, 그분은 앞을 보실 수 없으니, 자신의 삶에서 눈의 역할을 하는 그 도우미가 엄마와 같은 존재가 될 수 있겠구나 생각이 들었습니다. 자신의 도우미에게 깊이 “감사”하고 도우미를 “엄마”로 부르면서 온전한 신뢰를 두고 인도하는 대로 따라가는 그 시각장애인의 모습을 통해, 성삼위 하나님께서, 하나님 “아버지”를 향한 우리자신의 “감사”와 “신뢰”가 어떠한 지 스스로 깊이 돌아볼 수 있는 기회를 주시는 것 같습니다(고후 13:5). 그리고 여전히 고백합니다… “모든 것이 은혜입니다!”라고…(고전 15:10)
Recently, while I was at a Starbucks handling church administration and preparing for a sermon, I noticed a person with a visual impairment. This individual entered the café relying on a helper who had a rather large build. For about thirty minutes, they sat at the end of the table where I was sitting, talking about different things. Suddenly, leaning on the helper, the individual went up to the barista to ask a question before returning to her seat. I then heard her say a sincere “Thank you” to the helper for the assistance. About ten minutes later, as they were preparing to leave, the visually impaired person called the helper “Mother” and asked to leave. In that moment, I happened to glance at the individual’s face and noticed that she actually appeared older than the helper. It occurred to me that since this person cannot see, the helper, who functions as her eyes in this life, must truly be like a mother to her. Seeing the visually impaired person expressed deep “gratitude” and absolute “trust” by calling the helper “Mother” while following wherever she was led, I felt that the Triune God was giving us an opportunity to deeply reflect on the nature of our own “gratitude” and “trust” toward God our “Father” (2 Corinthians 13:5). And so, we find ourselves confessing once again… “Everything is grace!” (1 Corinthians 15:10).
